About

What

ForPune is a website where anybody will be able to get good quality answers to specific questions related to Pune. For free. By the community, for the community.

It's like Yahoo Answers, except that it is just for Pune, and there is a voting system in place to ensure that quality is maintained. Good answers can be voted up and bad answers voted down. In fact, even questions can be voted up or down, so bad questions and spam disappears from the site.

In addition, users of the site also gain reputation points for good questions and good answers, and lose reputation points for bad questions/answers. Thus there is incentive for maintaining the quality.

Why

Web-1.0 has failed Pune.

There are a lot of websites trying to be 'portals' for Pune, and be a source of all information about Pune, but none has managed to gather critical mass, and most have been abandoned halfway. There is no place to get information about Pune.

There are a bunch of mailing lists, and they are very useful, but they are useful only for people who know about them. And they are over-run by people asking the same questions over and over again. And each time, the questions get a different sub-set of the answers. There is rarely any attempt to collate together the information into one page for posterity

Twitter/facebook/orkut are nice and useful, but very transient. All info is continually lost.

This is an attempt to use web-2.0 to fix the problem. If this site succeeds, it will be a great resource for everyone in Pune. A place where you can as any question about Pune, and expect to get good answers. A place where idiots and spammers are downvoted quickly. A place where people with expertise can build a reputation that is useful for them elsewhere. A place where information is live, and is constantly updated, and grows over time.

That's a goal worth fighting for. And we need your help in doing that!

How

ForPune runs on OSQA, an open source clone of the StackOverflow/StackExchange platform.
