I heard bsnl/mtnl were experimenting with 3g, is pune on the list. Deepika padukone's advertisement kind of confirms that. So 3g in pune? anyone using?

BSNL has been piloting 3G for data (wireless datacards) for nearly a year now. Not sure if they have launched it commercially.

On the other hand, Reliance launched its 3G Data service (Reliance Netconnect) in March/April of this year.

I have heard that Tata Indicom is planning to launch its 3G data service (Tata Photon) in Pune starting this January - but haven't seen any confirmation.

No idea on 3G service plans from Airtel, Vodafone, etc.

If I get this right, netconnect is a SIM based device? Can I use that SIM in my android? Does that SIM has voice channel enabled or its just data?

@Dipen, no, netconnect is not a SIM based device. It has it's own USB device that plugs into a computer.

Yes BSNL is the only service provider that offers 3G services, it is expected that vodafone and Airtel would come up soon with 3G services (soon like 3-6 months). And I am sure that it is in Pune, only I haven't met a person who is using 3G services.

Actually, BSNL is not the only 3G provider. Reliance NetConnect is there, and is more easily available, and works for most of Pune. I'm a happy customer and know many others.

The issue with BSNL is that it became available earlier in the year, but very quickly they got oversubscribed, and are no longer giving out new connections. Hence nobody is getting connections, and we don't know too many existing customers - so no feedback.

Brainstogether, can you please update your answer to reflect this. Thanks.

Reliance netconnect is only one with wide coverage. But their billing woes are so worse, I have opted to stay unconnected than use any of Reliance products. Recently, most of my colleague who use Reliance and adored the speed in beginning are saying that connectivity and speed has dropped after the subscriber base has increased. My own view though.

I had enquired for BSNL 3G data card, but the person on phone told me that there is more than 6months of waiting period as they dont have the hardware available. Usual 'sarkari' stuff from BSNL.

MTS has started prepaid 3G data cards in mumbai with name MBlaze. They have coverage in pune as per their site. But I could not find any store in their store locator so I assume its not available in pune right now.

  • BSNL EDVO Cards (preferred if you are lucky to get one.)
  • Reliance NetConnect
  • Tata Photon
  • Vodafone (recently came to know about this). [3G available in certain areas only]

BSNL sim cards the one which are used in cellphones are also 3G enable. But network is not up in all areas. [http://bsnl.co.in/service/3g.htm]

Is tata photon working in Pune yet. Last time I heard it was about to start?

How are reviews of reliance users as per speed, coverage & performance?

I'm using BSNL 3 G since last month. The services are good but the speed is not that much as they marketed..

The speed is decent and the introductory offer plan of free 12 GB is very nice..

You can visit model colony exchange, or karve road exchange. Sim cards bought after Mar 2010 are 3G enable by default. You may like to reconfirm it tough.

Vodafone has finally launched 3G in Pune at the same 2G Plan rates.

That was a trial offer valid until 10 April only. Since 11-Apr, Vodafone 3G was launched commercially and is no longer free.
