Can you suggest some big auditoriums in Pune that have a capacity of 500+, and that are used for hosting conferences/presentations/talks?

I am aware of the commercial ones - Bal Gandharva Ranga Mandir, Tilak Smarak Mandir, Yashwant Rao Chavan Natya Griha, Nehru Memorial Hall. Please don't add them as answers.

I am specifically looking at educational/research institutions and large companies that have such facilities.

(e.g. Persistent System's Dewang Mehta Auditorium, IUCAA's Auditorium --> However DO NOTE THAT both these have a capacity of less than 500)

There is a list of Pune Auditoriums at the pune.org.uk site.
Most of them are covered in other answers here.

    * Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Sanskrutik Bhavan
      Maaldhakka Chowk, Mangalwar Peth
    * Bal Gandharva Rang Mandir
      J M Road
    * Bharat Natya Sanshodhan Mandir
      Sadashiv Peth
    * Natyakalakar Sah Sanstha Mydt
      Gulab Nagar, Dhankawadi
    * Nehru Memorial Hall
      Ambedkar Road, Camp
    * Pimpri-Chinchwad Prekshagriha
      Jeevan Nagar, Chinchwad
    * Tilak Smarak Trust
      Tilak Road, Sadashiv Peth
    * Wedavati Purakashit Drama Coy
      Laxmi Narayan Nagar, Erandawana
    * Yashwantrao Chavan Natyagriha
      Kothrud

I was attracted by the Shaniwar Wada as a place for TED.
But, it may not fit the bill here (would have liked to see it there tho).
Likewise, the IUCAA Chandrasekhar Auditorium may be too small, but it would be nice to host a TED session there too.

How about Shanivar Wada? Shanivar Wada is the very right place to hold the TEDxPune. I am not sure about whom we need to contact to get the place , but they do organise lots of events at Shanivar Wada

In general, Shaniwar Wada is only appropriate for "evening" events. Not events that can be held during the day. Also, does it have a stage?

Also - note we want indoor seating in auditorium like format. So outdoor venues won't work.

Quoting from the TEDx webpage - We should be looking for a University or corporate auditorium - they will meet most of the needs. Natural settings would affect the video projection and then carrying the technology and the audience to such remote locations might become difficult.

Recommendations for larger TEDx events -

Select an intimate venue. Think about theaters or auditoriums, rather than conference halls. Look for a venue that's wide rather than deep, with the shortest possible distance from audience members to the stage. This creates a connection between the speaker and the audience, and among the audience members. TED is particularly fond of theaters with "continental style" seating -- deeply spaced rows, no center aisle, and a generous rake, giving everyone good sight lines. Avoid ballrooms. The flat orientation makes it difficult to see, and the high ceilings and bright lights make it hard to create atmosphere. Look for venues with built-in infrastructure. (University, corporate and municipal auditoriums tend to work best.) The venue should have: Ability to project and view video Location for food and beverage setup Conveniently located bathrooms Exhibit space Party space for sponsor lunches and other events Find out whether your venue is union-operated. This will impact your budget. Special exhibits:

For large events, consider designating areas outside the main auditorium for art, science exhibits, hands-on experiences and overflow seating.

TEDx Lab: An area for attendees to try out new software, gadgets, technologies and products Bloggers' Alley: Consider setting up a dedicated bloggers' area outside the auditorium, with desks and power outlets (laptops inside the auditorium can be a distraction) Simulcast Lounge: If you anticipate a large crowd, set up viewing monitors outside the main auditorium

Hi Amit,

One pointer on Dewang Mehta auditorium. The auditorium maxes out at 350, but, if you combine the adjacent cafeteria you can boost that to 500+ when you use simulcast. We have done that several times. Plus there is enough additional areas in the building to accodmate the ancillary workshops etc mentioned by Arnab. As you are aware all other items mentioned on the list can be done there.

But I would say that it is preferred if we get a larger auditorium that seats 500 people in one shot.

You can try Persistent senapathi bapat road for auditorium. I had previously attended a conference of CSI there, So they will provide it for outsiders to conduct their seminars and meetings.

I2IT Auditorium (Hinjawadi IT Park, Phase 1) is also good and has good capacity. I would also suggest to check with IT Companies like Cognizant, Wipro Infy, which have good well equipped Auditoriums with connectivity. Parking Space would also not a problem over there.

Ishanya is a great option. Amphitheatre..and caters to the right audience too. Only drawback is that it is at one end of the city [near the airport]

I have a complementary question: apart from Persistent's Dewang Mehta, what are the Pune halls/auditoriums/amphitheatres that serve best for a smaller audience? Even college halls would do.

Requirements are: should seat at least about 80 to 100 and should have projection & sound facilities (though sound can be compromised on).

Would also like to know the approximate financial terms for these.

Thanks.

Ramanand, I think it would be better to ask this as a separate question.
