Hi,

My only outing with pune guys have been on a tweetup to sinhgad (which btw is awesome) there in we started talking about conducting webexpo (read websummit etc) followed on the moral principles of oreilly's web2expo every year in US (I must admit that origin of the idea crops from jealousy of not being able to attend those) India and Indians has been contributing to web and software as founders/VP's of facebook/google and what not, I didnt want the idea to die but I did notice a certain confusion about "HOW", what are the parameters for it to be pan india web summit. There are more challenges than comfort, so my question is what do you think the challenges are? What the potential is? What are the parameters? My set of challenges:

1> We have google/microsoft research labs, development centers in india. There is AOL, yahoo, Amazon development centers but how do you reach them? how to bring the best on one platform. More than contacts we need a promise of quality.

2> What does it really mean to put up a good show? Is it good enough? I was going through oredev a dev conference in sweden (though leading in various physical sciences, has no been active in software more than india) and I think their line up was awesome.

3> Budget, I have no clue abt this but I think its one of the challenge.

TED India proves that we have things to offer and self organize, its amazing how many people attended it at a not so cheap cost of 2000$ per head, I think we are interested in whats going on in the world.

Do you feel the need of such event as a necessity or its good to have? What are the challenges you feel in organizing such a event. And of course viability of pune in hosting an event like that.

Dipen, I would really say that there are no significant challenges. This will just take a few dedicated people who decide that it needs to be done and it can be done.

  1. Ensuring quality: I can guarantee we can line up enough influential people who are willing to help us find enough good speakers. For example, Anand Deshpande (CEO of Persistent) and other people like him will definitely help us reach the right people.

  2. What does it mean to put up a good show? I don't know. But I think the best way to find out is to give it a shot and see what the reviews are. And then improve.

  3. Budget: I think we have enough people in our midst now, who have some experience with holding conferences, so I think this should be a solvable problem.

My guess would be, pick a tentative date 4 to 6 months from now, form a core team of 3 to 4 people who are willing to go for it and we can work out everything else.
