I recently bought an IFB washing machine. The service guy recommends to fit a water filter to prevent machine from rusting and the clothes from deteriorating.

Is anyone using a automatic washing machine with/without a water filter? Do you advice to go for the filter or is it fine running the machine without it? How much does it cost? (the service man is asking Rs. 2500/-)

Thanks.

I have been using a front-load IFB machine without a filter for a few years now.
However, the quality of water you get from your taps would probably matter.

Hard water does not give good lather and can also damage metals and plastics.
To that end, if you get hard water, you may need a water softener.
Here is one reference I came up with on Domestic Water Softeners.
Check if these points make sense for your conditions.
Here is another reference: you may not need any of these 3 points, but its good to know.

I've used washing machines for years without the water filter being needed. They haven't been IFB (whirlpool & lg) and they've been top-loading, but still, I don't think that should be an issue.
