I need to buy a broadband connectivity that can keep me mobile. Connectivity all over Pune as well as Mumbai is the requirement. Any suggestions for service provider? Any suggestions on which plan to choose? Whether I should go for Reliance/Tata indicom or Idea/Airtel? Also, any idea about what is the processing time for new application? Is it practical to believe that i can get a connection in 2 days?

I recently bought a reliance netconnect broadband+ (prepaid)

If you carry the documents (pan card, address proof, one photo) with you to any reliance store, a prepaid can be activated in 15 minutes (ok, 30 minutes :-) )

A post paid connection takes a little longer to be activated. In case you are going postpaid, you can bargain on the price of the device. I was being given a 200 Rs discount on the device if I agreed to take postpaid.

In terms of plans, the prepaid and postpaid plans are available at http://www.rcom.co.in/Rcom/personal/internet/wireless_internet.html#tariffP

There's one missing item in the prepaid plans though, which is the recharge for Rs 3000/-. It gives 18GB with a validity of 6 months. This turns out to be approx Rs 450+T per month for 3GB per month of usage, and flexibility of borrowing from future usage, or saving for future use. Compare that to the 3GB postpaid plan of Rs 850+T with no flexibility.

+1, Very useful answer. What is the bandwidth you get with this? Have you checked it across Mumbai and Pune?

I get max speeds in the range of 250-400Kbps, which is not bad. I don't find it limiting. I haven't tested it across Pune and Mumbai, but there are too many users of this device around, and if there was a problem, it would have been prominent in the google searches.

This is not exactly an answer, but the general idea will be to locate a mobile service provider with good service across Pune and Mumbai.

This could be complicated -- Idea/Bharti has trouble in parts of Mumbai and Airtel has trouble in many parts of Pune.

Things can be better if you are going to stick to the business districts (like South Mumbai). But, if you move all over Mumbai, a good service provider might be difficult.

Towards an answer, Reliance might be good. But, for now the speeds in Pune may not be as good as those in Mumbai... (I refer to the USB broadband solutions).

I have tried Reliance Netconnect Broadband in Pune, Mumbai and other cities. Found the speeds to be very good in Pune and outside Pune. Their device price has been reduced to Rs.2299/- (I think) in order to compete against Tata Indicom who recently launched in Pune. When I had tried to buy their prepaid plan, they had mentioned unavailability citing that the no. of prepaid connections were limited and therefore they had run out of those connections. Postpaid is of course always available at their stores.

Recently, I saw a DEMO of Tata Indicom's hi-speed broadband device (Photon). Their local speeds are good. Similar to Reliance. However, I don't really have much of an idea regarding how it would perform outside. My experience with a Tata Indicom older & slower speed modems (156kbps) was that its connectivity wasn't as good as a similar slower speed device available from Reliance.

Tata Photon's postpaid plans are slightly cheaper than those of Reliance (as of now) at the higher ranges. But I guess with increased competition, all these prices will come down and eventually the USB device would be had free or close to free along with postpaid plans.

I use Tata Photon Plus and its pretty good. I have even used it for VPN connection to europe and remote troubleshooting with this connection from quite remote places in Pune. I would highly recommend Tata Photon plus. My Colleague had Reliance card and it was not as fast as Tata Photon
