Actually, I am doing Computer Science & Engineering and my 3rd year is going to start in August, I read a article on 5 things that Computer Science Engineering students should focus on on the punetech.com site.

After reading the article I got to know that there's much to learn right now and I got even a little bit confused too. I have a little knowledge of C\C++ and am currently doing JAVA for the 6 week training certification.

I would like to get some guidance on what courses I should go for and if you could tell me some books to look out for. and also the criteria or things to look out for, so that I get a good job.
I'll be really thankful to you.

While I can think of several directions to discuss your question,
There is already an existing source to resolve your query -- its called Stackoverflow.

Start with
What undergraduate computer science course best prepares programmers for the workplace?

Then look at these and other similar questions there.
most of this is ranting, but it is good to 'hear' what people say and vote for.

  1. What is the single most effective thing you did to improve your programming skills?
  2. What books should I read to have an undergraduate education in Computer Science?
  3. Two more book related questions at Stackoverflow
  4. If you could take one computer science course now, what would it be?
  5. What college/university course(s) you wish you have taken more seriously?
  6. Tips for picking a computer science masters program
  7. Best language for introductory “higher level” programming course.
  8. Is Computer Science For Me?

also think a bit more on how to phrase your question from these examples :)

After all that, also check Jeff Atwood on How Should We Teach Computer Science?
I also like his recommended reading list.

But, most important, choose a good project that will help you learn more than programming a particular module or model (whichever the case may be).

Like Nik said, do a good project.

  • Work hard: Far too many students don't do any work on the project except a few weeks before the deadlines.
  • Have a good guide (from Industry): If you are working on a project by yourself, it is quite possible that you're working on something irrelevant, unimportant, or obsolete.
  • Build a real product: Don't do just the interesting parts. Also work on all the boring parts that are needed to convert your project into something that real people will use. That will be the best education.
