What are the things that you think are absolutely a buy from US rather than buying locally in India before relocation?

Here are some things in my list. Kindly add in your suggestions

  1. Electronics - Laptops, smartphones, SLR and Apple products(iPhone etc.)
  2. Kids Games - Kindle, Handhelds, Wii, Kinect etc.
  3. Leisure - Branded Clothing, Shoes, Perfumes, Cointreau and Tequila

In 2010 - you can pretty much get everything here (yes - electronics is a little bit more expensive).

Also depends on whether you are shipping a container or not. (If yes - then you have a lot of flexibility ...).

In addition to the categories you have listed, I will add 2 more (especially if you are shipping a container):

Food - Dry products, sauces, seasonings, canned stuff, etc Houseware & Home Improvement Stuff - Basically any thing that you used to buying from Target, etc.

  1. Bring 220v-110v step-down transformers (to work all your 110v gadgets. You will need a few of these in different wattages. www.samstores.com will sell you and ship these out.

  2. I personally think that you should get all your appliances - big and small. If you already own washing machines, electric driers etc. While you get these in India, the capacity is nowhere near what you would get in USA and the wash cycles are much longer here. Even good fridges that you already own.

A great detailed list is provided here: List Of Household Items To Bring When You Move To India. Additional items of interest may be Bringing and Using Electronic Devices in India

I just moved 9 months back. From my experience, I would suggest SLR, camera gear, good kitchen items like from "Sur la table", "Willams-Sonoma" or "Bed bath and beyond" this quality items are available in Pune but damn expensive.

US is consumer paradise in my opinion. if you are getting a container bring every good quality item you already own. but ship home to home. Mumbai port customs is BS try to ship door to door if you want to do. Ensure you have someone's address given here in pune for destination. Make somebody else handle all customs items for you.

KIDS TOYS!!!!!

Dryer especially.. the washers here even the expensive ones doesnot dry clothes good enough. Good luck with your move.

Bring a step down transformer
