I have been desperately waiting for High Definition TV (HDTV) Programming to be available in India for over 2 years now! There have been numerous proposals, but unfortunately, as of now, I think it is not available in Pune (or anywhere in India for that matter). I hope atleast some channels come get launched in 2010!

I believe that the only reason you might want an HDTV in Pune is if you have HD content on HD media that you're bringing from abroad, or if you're downloading HD content off the web.

Navin - you don't have a choice these days :) Almost all flat screen LCD TVs are HD Ready. Almost all major brands have virtually stopped making non-HDTVs :)

There are a couple of DTH operators offering HD content like Sun Direct. But it is still only 1-2 channels. Among the rest of the operators, Airtel and BIG are on the verge of launching HD channels. But India is some way from HD streams. Of course, that doesnt stop you from buying HDTV or enjoying it, as there are other native HD stuff available in Bluray or as Navin said, on the net.

Yes, BluRay discs are a good way to enjoy your HDTV. Also, if you haven't bought any from outside India - The Landmark store in Pune Camp has a decent collection (though the BluRay discs are quite expensive..around Rs. 1500).

Finally! High Definition TV (HDTV) Content is available in India. SunTV Direct DTH launched this service recently. I got it installed last week. Its great (especially for watching Cricket in HD).

At present Sun DTH have 4-5 HD Channels available (including IPL Cricket in HD, Nat Geo HD, Discovery HD). More channels are expected to be added in the coming months.
