Please suggest your strategies/approaches to reduce the cost or get additional value during your new car purchase. Please provide any insights into

  • Best time of year/month to purchase (and why?)
  • Approaches to negotiate with multiple dealers - does that work?
  • How to negotiate anything when the cars have a backlog on delivery - i.e. you have to wait a few weeks to get the car delivery? Would dealers be interested?
  • What accessories (mats/mud-flaps?) are you likely to get thrown in?

Also, does anyone think that dealers overcharge on the RTO fees/Octroi fees? Looking at the RTO website, the fees seem to be Rs 200 for cars plus Rs 350 for smart card plus Tax (at 7% of ex-showroom price). The dealers pricesheet always shows more - is this negotiable?

Similarly, octroi seems varied with different dealers - how can that be? And what is the octroi amount on cars?

Note - a similar thread is at Your top pune car dealers and why?

the best time to purchase any big thing is around the festival of diwali. its considered an auspicious time and also you'll get lots of offers from various car dealers and also the car companies themselves. To get details and reviews about cars ask your friends, children, family memebrs, look up on the internet, magazines like overdrive will be of great help. Im not sure about the negotiation part, big dealers won't budge. as for the RTO fees, if you go by law, it is the responsiblity of the buyer to carry out the registrations and other procedures regarding to the purchase of the car and not of the dealer. the service charges to this vary from dealer to dealer and it can be sometimes negotiated.
