What is a good cable/dish package that I can take which will let me record TV programs? I found TataSky+ http://www.tataskyplus.com/why-get-tata-sky.html. Anyone has any opinion on that or any other service.

I haven't compared to others, but it's quite good. The UI is surprisingly well done. You can also use mobile apps to schedule recordings when you're out of your home (it actually sends the signal over satellite to your DVR)

I hear that an HD version is about to be released any time now. Might be worthwhile waiting for that.

Yes..the current version is good. Though still no updates on the availability date for the HD-DVR box.

Tata Sky HD PVR feedback.

Sales:

  • Reasonably incident-free payment via IVR. I know it's due to RBI rules for credit card OTP etc, but I was surprised that I entered everything without a mistake.
  • Price is very good. Low in fact.

Install:

  • Happened within expected period.
  • Call received for appointment.
  • Pleasantly surprised to see HDMI cable included in box. I thought I was going to have to go out and get ripped off for anywhere between 300 to 2000 bucks for a cable.
  • Install workflow has improved a couple of notches. Connector hardware etc. are of significantly better quality than the first install. Engineer came with a splitter, and it worked without a problem with a single (concealed, under floor) cable from dish. I was expecting major goof-ups here, starting from not bringing the splitter to experiencing operational trouble. Everything's smooth.

Experience:

  • Setup is straightforward.
  • HD looks awesome.
  • Remote is very well designed from the usability point of view (was the case with earlier PVR too)
  • Translucent menu is gorgeous. Best I've seen in commercial electronics yet!
  • The guide button works 10x better than the old one. Of course, the underpowered old STB was overloaded with crazy Java crap, making browsing through channels immensely painful. Still.
  • Scheduled recording via box and via iphone app work fine.

All in all, great experience.

EDIT: Clarify splitter config.

The PVR has two tuners, so you can record a program while watching another one. Each tuner gets a separate input cable. Typically, each of these two cables run all the way to the dish, to two LNBs.

In my case, I had a single under-floor concealed cable running from the terrace where the dish was installed to the TV area. So they put a single LNB on the dish, used the cable and put a splitter near the PVR to supply the two tuner inputs.

In practice I have observed no limitations with the splitter config. Recording and playing happen simultaneously with full fidelity. It does cost Rs 100 extra.

I hear that you need two cables instead of one from the antenna to the set-top-box one for DVR and one for TV. You have mentioned that you are using a splitter instead. Is that a good enough work around or will the quality of recording etc be compromised?

I have added more info to the answer. No issues with splitter.

Yes we have used the splitter as well and the reception is good thus far
