There is a forlorn, dilapidated showroom near the Swargate end of Tilak Road. You almost want to buy an HMT as a sort of souvenir to a fast vanishing age. Anyway. I wanted a mechanical watch, which is a far more interesting engineering artifact than a boring old electronic crystal-based watch. One look at the ridiculous price tags and massive markups turned me off all imported watches. Then I remembered HMT. As a public sector undertaking, they have no pressure to make a profit, which means I get max value for money. Went to said dilapidated showroom after calling him up (the lone manager-salesman came out and waved, or I'd have missed the place - no signboard) and got a self-winding mechanical watch from there about 6 months ago for around Rs 3000. Working great. The time isn't as accurate as a crystal, of course, slips 5 mins every week or so, but who cares?
