Which are the good Mexican Restaurants (also serving good margaritas)? |
|
A place that serves Mexican food is the Il Fungo Magico Italian & Mexican Restaurant which is next to the Naturals Ice Cream Parlour on Lane 7, North Main Road, Koregaon Park. This restaurant is apparently run by the same people who run La Pizzeria / Little Italy. Food is supposed to be good. I am not sure how close Spanish Cuisine is to Mexican food, but if it is close enough and if you are up for it, you can try Zara which is a Tapas Bar in Viman Nagar. It serves authentic Spanish Tapas food and is supposed to be good. This is located above the Reliance store, opposite the Cafe Coffee Day outlet in Viman Nagar (towards the airport side). And oh yes! There is always FLAGS next to Inox. They have an extensive international menu (slightly expensive) with quite a few Mexican dishes. Wow, I was not aware of a Tapas bar in Pune. Will definitely need to try it out. Thanks! (and no, this is certainly not going to be close to Mexican food)

This might be an opportunity for entrepreneurs. There is a foodie sub-group among OCC members that has had at least one meeting. Seems to me that they should be discussing Mexican food. 1
+1. Right now, there is no really good place I can go to for Mexican food. And anybody who starts a Mexican restaurant can be assured of a good revenue source in Amit Paranjape!!

Jazz By Tha Bay and Hard Rock Cafe have pretty decent Margaritas. Isn't it "not just jazz by the bay" if you are referring to the one at E-square?

I haven't tried it myself, but a Mexican tourist in Pune commented on my blog that Polka Dots (Aundh) has decent Tacos. Should take his word for it, I guess! A Mexican tourist in Pune? Seriously!? Well, might just have to try out the taco now. But I still dislike Polka dots. The food is good, but the service is really slow, and on most days, there are flies buzzing around. I wish they would move to a better location.

Navin - I agree with your comment regarding the location of Polka Dots. They need a bigger, better location for sure. Regarding the Mexican visitor in Pune, check this comment -- http://aparanjape.wordpress.com/2008/10/30/restaurant-review-deccan-rendezvous/#comment-544

We all need at least a Taco Bell :) Though I still haven't been served good Margaritas or Mojitos. 1
If B'lore has a taco bell whats wrong with Pune? Pune food entrepreneurs don't seem to be getting it right. There are hundreds of restaurants opening with the same kind of food with sky high prices but no one is trying with variety of food.

Just heard from somebody whoe works at Taco Bell management in Delhi that Taco Bell did a detailed study and concluded that Indian palate is not ready for mexican food (or maybe Taco Bell)!

Maybe they need to start the Chihuahua ads first: "¡Yo quiero Taco Bell! Besides, no one in their right mind should be eating or pining for taco bell. They are open late, which is probably the best thing. At this point, I would be happy with a Taco Cabana style place ...

Don't know any exclusively Mexican restaurant in Pune (a la Taco Bell or Burrito House in US). However there are a few places I can recollect that serve Mexican or pseudo-Mexican fare. The most common dish being Nachos with Cheese!! Wonder why that is so popular in Pune/India as opposed to Tacos or Burritos in US... Anyways here are the names I know: 1) La Pizzeria - has a few Mexican Dishes 2) Shiv Sagar (!!) - has a few pseudo-Mexican dishes! 3) 19th Hole - has Mexican fare - completely vegetarian |

I crave for good mexican (okay - TexMex) after returning from Texas. Even though a lot of restaurant 'claim' to have mexican dishes, none delivers on the quality and authenticity. Granted it needs the right chilli peppers and the sauces to get the flavor but I am sometimes shocked to find innovative ingredients in the dishes. One restaurant served me marinara sauce once under the pretext of 'mexican food' and yes, it's one if the above mentioned restaurants. :( Even Hard Rock Cafe in Pune can't get it right. The closet I have tasted is Deccan Renzesvous (Lamb Nachos). Heard Polka dots have relatively authentic Tacos. But overall, a big disappointment in terms of mexican food around town. So I cook at home with sauces 'imported' from Texas :) Anybody wanting to start a venture, I will wholeheartedly support it :) Sarika, please fund me, i am ready to cook! :)
