Which is the best place to view the Palkhi in motion and get a sense of the whole procession of Warkari's? I am told that it is a fascinating experience when viewing this from one of the ghats when one of the palkhis leave Pune but I don't have specifics. Please provide details if you have experienced this. Also, when should we be present there? Please provide specifics for the year 2011 - i.e. which day, what time? Thanks |

Palakhi passing through "Dive Ghat" is indeed a spectacle. The ghat is around 30 KM from city. Not sure there is any specific spot in Dive ghat for palakhi viewing. And the ghat should be closed for regular traffic during plakhi procession. |

This is specifically in the context of watching it in Pune. Palkhi is a very long procession, and one shouldn't watch it from a distance. You'll get bored because it goes on for hours. The best way to enjoy it is to participate in it. I have had a close look at the palkhi at two places. First - Wakadewadi. The advantage of this place is that the procession is just reaching pune, most "viewers" will come in as it gets into the old city. The roads are big here, so the crowd seems sparse. Get into the procession somewhere near Khadki area and spend a couple of hours between khadki and COEP. Around 2:30 on 25th June 2011 is a good time to reach Wakadewadi/khadki. Another option is to be in deccan area (Alka Talkies) in the evening. Do both, if possible. There is a group of IT folks who join the palkhi for a day, called IT Dindi. More information and contact details are available on http://www.waari.org/ The complete schedule of the Palkhi can be seen at http://www.waari.org/Waari_Program.html |
