Every year, Pune witnesses the palkhis of Tukaram and Dyaneshwar on their way from Dehu/Alandi to Pandharpur. People from all walks of life participate - poor people who don't know where their next meal is coming from, rich guys who get airlifted by helicopter at the end of a hard way of walking, IT guys for whom this represents the most exercise they'll have all year, and also the longest stretch without the internet, and old people who you would expect to be bedridden, but are instead walking 20 km every day. So what is it to be a warkari? Can somebody give a first person account? |
