Good street style food (not snacks like bhel/chat bur food like kababs, curries, rotis, sweets etc) is what I miss the most in Pune. Places like Bade Miya or many khau gallis in South Bombay or Sarafa in Indore or Mominpura in Nagpur. Any such places in Pune? Please exclude places like the Chatushrungi chowpatty that sell mostly panipuri, chat, pulao etc. Update: Let me clarify how these places are. First, they serve "khana" and not "nashta". You go there to have your multi-course full dinner (or lunch). So you'll have people selling kebabs and all sorts of curries with naan/roti and pulao/biryanis and sweets (not ice-cream, but Indian sweets like halwa, jamuns, malpua etc) and/or dosa/idli/etc and/or kulfi/ice-cream and/or sharbats/faluda/shikanji/etc. They are mostly at their peak during evening/nights and are mostly closed during the day. For example, the Sarafa in Indore is a big market of jewellers during the day, but turns into a gastronome's paradise after 7 pm. Here's a slideshow video of Sarafa Indore: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vv9puXcGKZ8 In Pune, you can sample this "mahol" during the month of Ramazan in the Mominpura area near Mamledar Kacheri (Swargate). Not sure about if they would classify as 'true'street food locations, but Dhole Patil Road with Kapila Kathi Kababs, Nandu's Parathas, etc. comes close... Another place to get good kathi rolls is Kareems (earlier Olympia) on East Street. There's also Dorabjees Restaurant that serves good and cheap Parsi food. But none of these are street-style.

Dunno what you would call the food-court at E*Square. I am bringing that up in this context because that food doesn't fall in the category of fine dining, nor does it fall in the pure chaat/pani-puri/bhel kind of stuff. There are some decent joints there of maybe what you can call "street style" food. Surely the creators of that place will not be happy with me though :). And yes, I don't know any of the places that you mentioned in Mumbai/Nagpur. Hence I maybe completely off-track. Similar kind of food is available at the food court in Ishanya Mall as well. |

There aren't too many places like that in Pune. JM Road has plenty of eating places and so does Dhole Patil Road. Sarasbaugh has plenty of stalls lined up. For non-veg - definitely Shivaji Market is the place to be. Radio's, Shahi Dawat, and many others are pretty good. You must try the Jaishankar Paani Puri there once you are there. |

I'm assuming that one of the key ingredients of 'street style' is that there are 5 or 6 different vendors (if not much more) offering different kinds of foods, and you can pick and choose where and what you want to eat...
Does the 'chowpatty' or whatever in Nucleus Mall (near Sadhu Vaswani Chowk) have something like this?
The chowpatty "below" Nucleus Mall is an approximation. But its mostly made up of vendors selling Chinese and Paav Bhaji. Also, no sweets :-(. If you combine the nearby Blue Nile with this place, you are almost there :-).
Man o man I miss Sarafa from Indore so much! Havent had time to check it out in a really long time :( . I havent found anything similar to it in Pune/Nasik. But Chawpaty at university circle does come close to it. IT also has multi-cuisine restros, though not close in quality to Sarafa (or Chappan for that matter).
