Get covered by media. Bloggers, print media. Its been just a month since its launch, and I am sure it will become popular as time goes by.

+1 IMHO it's bound to happen just a matter of time.

One obvious way is: plug it in bar-camps, if it hasn't been already. Another: target Radio Mirchi and the likes.

+1, Excellent idea! i'll really like some forPune stickers. Maybe a better logo (favicon) would be a good idea too.

May be a mobile application to post question, check reply and an advanced search would help.

All the above are good ways of promoting ForPune but the one point I would like to outline is 'Asking good, informative questions/answers'. Word of mouth is the best way of any idea/initiative getting promoted. So if there is good information available (through questions) which benefit Punekars in day to day life they are going to recommend it to others, which is a very good and convincing way of promoting. Some recent attempts to market their products by a few users should be restricted, so that ForPune becomes a more reliable platform for information about Pune. Also a user who comes to ForPune once should continue to come back again, which can only happen with good knowledge database (through questions & answers).

Another possibility is to drop a note about forpune.com in the newsgroups of large Pune companies like Infosys, Symantec, Wipro, Telco etc. That could help propagate awareness about the site.

Is there any way of getting picked up by search engines the moment "pune" is put in the search? I have no idea how this happens, but if you get googled more, you get noticed more :)

A good direction. I find that superuser/stackoverflow answers pop up often in my google searches. This is not the case yet with forPune (though a couple of them did turn up in directed searches -- meaning, I looked at the question and fired a suggestive query on google to see if it appeared in the front page).

Start a ForPune FM channel on the lines of NPR of the US. That will give a no-nonsense, clean, infotainment channel to tune in to, if you compare with the current noise on various FM channels in Pune.

An interesting idea but one that will need a lot of good resources. Will be happy to see anyone work on this!

A very cheap means to advertise forpune.com could be to send bulk SMS'es to Pune folks. That way one could come to know about the site quickly.

@Subhojit, I really want to upvote your idea about newsgroups at companies (maybe even get some posters for advertising on the company newsboards), but your SMS idea puts me off :-) Can you please split these two answers?

(11 Jan '10, 10:02) nik ♦

Nik, did that :)

Since this is a Community Wiki already, I guess I can do this...
Subhojit says: "Another possibility is to drop a note about forpune.com in the newsgroups of large Pune companies like Infosys, Symantec, Wipro, Telco etc. That could help propagate awareness about the site."

Would like to upvote that part and summarize as,

  1. Local company newsgroup publicity
  2. Posters on newsboards of local companies

One way could be to get more and more Punekars involved who are in different professions in varying capacities. Some PMC/PCMC officers, RTO Officers, etc. should be contacted (we might know someone who might know someone who might know a concerned officer -6 degrees rule) and encouraged to contribute to Pune & Punekars in this new and interactive way. Similarly people from other professions like food connoisseur, wine connoisseur, fashion designers, real estate agents, builders should also be made aware about ForPune (offcourse we have to curb any sort of advertising nevertheless they can answer questions in ways that can benefit them also). This will help get more informative and quality answers and more and more people will get interested. In cases where such professionals/punekars are willing to contribute but are not that tech-savvy we can always setup a offline communication mode with them and in turn update questions with their answers, giving them full credit for the same.

A lot of people around us are actually involved in NGO and other local interest activities. Some off-line interactions on how this site could become a useful source of information while talking in these groups could be useful too. There are questions (for example) about contact references for traffic violations and safe methods for donations that could be updated by people active in these areas -- but, some of them probably do not know the benefits of such a forum yet.
