BSNL & Airtel were the most probable for IPTV. Have they already started the service? |
|
BSNL has launched Triple PLay couple of years back -- Tariff details as on Feb/2008.
Would be interesting to know if there is any feedback from users here. Update: I looked up a bit more and found these two references Update2: I was recently approached by BSNL Aundh Exchange again for IPTV services. I very much doubt if IPTV has been actually rolled out in Pune.

Hmmm, I was approached for a demo and trial couple of years back -- around the time these articles are dated I think. I already had DTH so was not too attracted with the idea. I also think the video quality will not beat DTH (for the streaming rates available today). Yet, would like to hear from someone with experience here.

I've been using Airtel IPTV combo (with phone & broadband) in delhi from last 7+ months. The total downtime in this period was not more than 90 minutes (in deferred timings) If that is the level of service than its no harm putting all eggs in one basket. MTNL service in Delhi is so-so. The link & line service of MTNL/BSNL is very unreliable. I think we'll have to wait for any private party to come up with the services.

@Rohit, Things are different in Metros. As an example, I carried a USB Broadband device (Tata Photon i think) with my to Mumbai last month. It gave near 3Mbps downloads there! While the same device (and laptop) in Pune gave me sub 1Mbps performance all the time...

Have been using BSNL IPTV for last few months. Service is neither bad, nor great. BSNL line has be quite reliable. IPTV provides PVR [Channel Recording] facility. (usb storage). Following links may be useful. |

There is one more thing to know. From what I know the traffic that IPTV generates gets added to your net traffic as well. So if you are on limited bandwidth (SOHO 500-600) or business plans you run the risk of shelling more money. If you are thinking of using IPTV then its better to have an unlimited plan as well. NO shirish the bandwidth division for IPTV is very nicely done. Airtel drops a 8mbps line at home where 6mbps is not accessible to normal data traffic. Though they claim 4mbps is more than enough for IPTV, they still keep 2mbps as buffer. Rest out of 2mbps pipe you cna opt for a broadband connection & a capping will be done accordingly from the NOC. Hence IPTV & data bandwidth is separate

BSNL is advertising big time for the triple play. But with their current line relibility, i am not sure what they can achieve. My experience with BSNL broadband is that it is extremely fast, but very unreliable. If your link goes down, no guarantee how much time they will take to recover. BTW, i have "seen" an IPTV in Mumbai, provided by MTNL. It was decent quality, but of course no match for the DTH services like Dish and Tata sky. Also, i believe in not integrating all services as an end user. If link goes down, all your services disappear simultaneously :) |
