I am NRI moving to Pune in first quarter 2010, i would like to know which ISP to use, i am looking for Broadband service with unlimited usage and >3Mbps connection. I also would like to know which wireless provider supports iphones. I currently have one from ATT would like to bring it over as the contract would be over with ATT by the time I am in India.

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks in Advance, Arun

Arun, As per my understanding, you're not going to get >3Mbps anywhere.

For wired services, I hear that BSNL is the best when it works (and for most people it works most of the time), but god save you when it stops working.

Airtel is pretty good.

IPhone - I don't know. Hopefully someone else will answer that.

+1, my sentiments exactly for the 3Mbps and BSNL Wired Services.

+1 Agreed with the BSNL feedback, excellent speed, pathetic customer support

Airtel, Tata Indicom, Reliance and BSNL all provide unlimited wired broadband plans. I believe all of them provide a min of 1 MBPs unlimited plan and some provide 4 MBPs or higher. Note - Unlimited broadband plans in India are still not very common and tend to be a little expensive. Many people still use data limited or time limited plans, where typical speeds are near 2 MBPs.

Regarding quality of service (and availability) - it varries by area in Pune. Airtel and Tata Indicom are reasonably ok.

Reliance NetConnect 3G wireless broadband is also decent. Limited plans with around 1MBPs but very good coverage and uptime reliability. Reliance also provides WiMax wireless service in some areas.

Regarding iPhone - I believe Airtel and Vodafone support it in India. But if you bring it over with your AT&T contract, then you will have to use a intl roaming plan - which are typically very expensive anywhere in the world.

Thanks for the answer, which area in pune is good for Airtel/Reliance any ideas? As far as the iphone goes, i would be outside of ATT contract so the phone would be available for any good GSM, whom would you recommend?

(06 Dec '09, 16:31) Arun Thandapani

As far as I know, Aundh area has both. I am sure so do most of the major suburbs.

(07 Dec '09, 03:50) Amit Paranjape ♦♦

I have tried Airtel, Tata Indicom and Reliance broadbands. Airtel has provided me best service and uptime. Others were not as good and unreliable. Like Amit has metioned, it sometimes also depend on what area of city you are in. I am in Pashan and I see a lot of people are generally satisfied with Airtel.

I have tried Airtel, TATA Indicome ,Reliance, And even Sify,You etc. Airtel do not provide service at all the locations , but my experience with airtel has been the best till now. Response time to customer query with Airtel is 1 hour, which is amazing. Dont even consider going for Sify or You, the are not good.

As Navin mentioned it's hard to get >3Mbps anywhere although I heard Reliance claiming that recently. But I would also suggest Airtel, there customer service is pretty good. BSNL - Its good but don't try your luck And I don't think that the IPhone you are bringing in would be supported here. Vodafone and Airtel both provide IPhone services but you have to buy the handset from them. Either ways 3G services are not supported by majority of ISPs yet.

Is there any wireless provider that supports 3G at all in Pune?

(06 Dec '09, 16:32) Arun Thandapani

Only BSNL provides 3G services right now.

(06 Dec '09, 16:36) Abhinav S

Reliance NetConnect provides 3G in most of Pune. However, there are certain pockets where the signal is weak and you'll end up with 2.5G. BSNL is an unknown quantity because they're not giving any new connections as far as I know. See http://forpune.com/questions/112/3g-services-in-pune for a more detailed discussion on this topic.

I use iPhone 2G and have airtel connection. I got this iPhone from USA and got it jailbraked in Pune. I have activated "Airtel Mobile Office" (GPRS) and it works pretty well.

Did your ATT contract end before coming to Pune?

(18 Dec '09, 10:41) Arun Thandapani

Airtel: If your area has a service I would recommend you blindly choose airtel. They offer connections through underground lines which typically are very very stable. I've faced no more than TOTAL 10 mins downtime in last 12 months. Customer service on the rare occasions I've called them is adequate. However they will halve the bandwidth for unlimited connections post initial 100G download (explicitly stated in the terms of service). Their unlimited plans cap out at 2MBps. However they offer higher bandwidths for other non unlimited plans.

Tata Indicom: Their connections are mostly through overhead cables. The cable management is outsourced (to the best of my knowledge) to local cable operators. They use junction boxes at various locations. Thus their points of failure are higher compared to Airtel. Moreover these junction boxes do not always have backup power. Thus the net connection goes down if the electricity supply in the area goes down. So long as the service works - you get the assured bandwidth always. Their customer service is courteous and prompt. But the customer service doesn't always have the answers and when they don't - be sure for one of the most frustratingly maddening experiences ever. My downtime experience with them has been anywhere between 4 hours to 15 days per month (average perhaps being about 2 days) over the 2-3 yrs I used their service. IMO choose them only if Airtel is not an option. Also if you are likely to exceed the 100G per month usage - they might be the ones to try instead of Airtel since they do not bring down the bandwidth. They offer 4MBPs or more.

Reliance: Haven't used them. Haven't heard too many negative comments about them also. But in some areas they offer wireless/wimax service. If thats true in the area you want the connection, definitely something to consider.

Both vodafone and airtel support iphones. But be careful about the data pricing. The officially advertised tariffs are extremely high (though I know a few who get charged well under these tariffs)

  1. BSNL takes some time to give you the BroadBand connection and it can be a pain to pursue them. However, once setup, they are very reliable and almost no human intervention is required for long times! Until one day there is a problem - and then again for a few days - GOD help you :). I have BSNL and know that its been excellent. They have the cheapest rates.

  2. Airtel/TataIndicom/Reliance - I know for one that in Baner whenever there is a powercut most of these broadband services get disconnected!! This is very disconcerting - it seems like their equipment is not on UPS!!

  3. Reliance Netconnect - wireless broadband works quite well across the country! I have used it in Pune, Calcutta, Chennai, Mumbai etc. and it gives excellent speeds though speeds may vary slightly. So if you are on the move, this is a good device to own.

  4. BSNL has the cheapest wireless broadband rates. I have heard good things about it at least within Pune. However given their network, I am doubtful of their roaming capabilities.

In the Baner area (i think) there was some problem with backup power for Reliance. They have recently setup mobile vehicles to drive to places and plug in backup power when there are power-cuts! This is while the 'wired' backup path is being setup.

I live in the area of Pimpale gurav, and at my room there is no feasibility for any wired connection. so I bought Relaince NetConnect+ and so far am happy with it ( as i dont have any other option).

Some known issues in service are: 1. It automatically get disconnected at 10:00PM. (I guess this is for activating the night hours plan, but this is anoying if you are in middle of something,i lost a client call in middle :( ) 2. If no net connection usages is detected, connection automatically gets disconnected. :(

I have Reliance broadband (in Aundh). Presently quite happy with it. It works really well ... when it works. Down times are rare, but when there's one, it takes hell lot of followup, time and effort to get things fixed. Once I've spent more than 15 days to get it working from the other side. Also it helps if you have the modem in your home and not in the basement etc.

But I have observed that they have been improving lately - may be because of increased competition.

-1 for Reliance Broadband in Baner. They are probably better in Aundh. Reliance Wireless Broadband seems much more reliable than their "wired" broadband. At least in Baner, we are facing several issues with Reliance "wired" broadband in terms of reliability. Reliance Broadband can certainly be renamed UnReliable in Baner :)
